ON MY LEADERSHIP
“The course was very freeform, while still providing enough structure to focus the learning on particular topics, and the content was specialized in such a way that everyone was eager to participate, particularly in the discussion board, which is incredibly hard to get students to be genuine about.”
“His own participation on the discussion board was frequent, engaging, and modeled respectful critical response.”
“In-depth and thoughtful responses from both my peers and the instructor. Great topics and structure.”
“The instructor is very knowledgeable and interacts with the class regularly.”
“He engaged with students, talked with them, was willing to help with projects, answered questions fast, everything he did helped my learning experience in this class.”
“He made the class fun, engaging, interesting, and he taught everything very well. I really enjoyed the class (though it did make me despise humanity even more than I did before the class).”
ON COURSE ORGANIZATION
“I enjoyed how seamlessly we went from playing the games to discussing them openly and however we saw fit. I really felt like I could say what I wanted in this course!”
“I enjoyed the spacing of the work throughout the course. It was not jammed up and rushed.”
MUTUAL RESPECT IN THE CLASSROOM
“I am an avid video game player, but also like to dissect the games I play. This was an excellent blend of both. A critical part of it was that all the students kept a level head and did not use standard insults to try and discount an opinion. Everyone was respectful and made their opinions known while not degrading anyone else.”
“First of all he would not allow people to be mean to each other obviously. But also when I sent in a devil’s advocate response he was all for a conversation and even admitted he would love to have it!”
“Everything was done perfectly. The respect [and] the way the class was conducted. Constant positive feedback.”
“Presents different viewpoints.”
“Very friendly, open-minded, and up to date on current events.”
“He was very willing to let people take over discussions and voice their ideas about topics, and letting the discussion stem from those ideas, but the moment they got off track to the class room discussion, he was great at getting us back on topic.”
CONSTRUCTIVE FEEDBACK
“Clear up the objectives slightly because it’s hard to figure out what needs to happen sometimes.”
“One assignment in particular didn’t seem as useful as the others, the video game review, and I would suggest editing that in a different way.”
“Perhaps also touch on music and its use in making a scene or level.”
“Perhaps one [suggestion], what the instructor said at the beginning of this course; that we were supposed to have one game to analyze, like a [Massively Multiplayer Online game], but the class was deemed too short for something like that.”
“Maybe a way to provide the games to students that couldn’t afford them. Because playing the games is a different experience than watching them.”
“Have our journals due before the weekly quizzes so students will read beforehand.”
“Sometimes I felt as he was not open to other people’s political views, and was too clear about his for a class where someone might not have the same views.”
